Staged Reading: We Are Proud to Present

Next up on the horizon… Steven Anthony Jones of the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre contacted me and asked me to participate in a staged reading happening next month. The play, “We Are Proud to Present” by Jackie Sibblies Drury, is an exciting piece of theatre, which reads one way on the page; but in performance, it’s something entirely different.  It focuses on what happens when an interracial group of actors get together to do a theatrical presentation about the origins of Namibia, and issues of race in our “postracial” society.  I found a link to the Soho...

PCSF’s 24-Hour Play Festival 2013

This weekend, I am returning to the Playwrights Center of San Francisco 24-Hour Play Festival! I participated in last year’s Festival.  You can read about my experience here. One step back, two steps forward.

It is with a heavy heart that I have had to withdraw from the understudy opportunity at Berkeley Rep. I’m not going to go on a diatribe or rail against the system or the circumstances on this blog.  Those who wish to ask me personally about what happened, I’ll be glad to share with you. But what I will say is that I’m proud to have been asked by The Rep to take on the opportunity.  And that despite the circumstances, I am keeping a positive outlook for myself. ACTORS EQUITY ASSOCIATION During this process, I’ve learned new things about my status with AEA.  The short...

Pericles, Prince of Tyre: TBA’s Editors’ Pick

From Sam Hurwitt in the March/April 2013 issue of Theatre Bay Area: Even for a company more geared toward contemporary work than the classics, it’s been a surprisingly long time since Berkeley Rep staged a Shakespeare play – since Much Ado About Nothing in 2001. Not that the company does that much of the Bard in general, at least not anymore: It staged just two of his plays in the 1990s, three in the ’80s, and a whopping 11 way back in the ’70s, when it was geared toward old plays in general. It’s been just about as long since acclaimed British director Mark...

2013 24-Hour Playfest: TBA’s Editors’ Picks

Of note.  Today in Theatre Bay Area: 24-Hour Playfest Playwrights’ Center of San Francisco Mar. 23 There’s something magical that happens when writers, directors and actors come together in a room: total chaos. Give them 24 hours to create a play, and it’s sure to be a scream. At the height of this madness is when the audience comes in. These 24-hour play fests are nothing new, but they can be a lot of fun. The night before the performance, the playwrights are given their theme, and then they have all night to write their play. (I’m guessing some combination of coffee and/or Red Bull will be...

Pericles, Prince of Tyre at Berkeley Rep

Yesterday, an email appeared in my inbox with a curious Subject line:  “understudy PERICLES?” And so, the last 24 hours have been a bit of a whirl, as suddenly I’m now engaged to understudy in Berkeley Repertory Theatre‘s Spring production of Pericles, Prince of Tyre. There’s not much I know at this point, and I’m not sure yet what character or actor I’ll be keeping my eyes on.  But nonetheless, just to be asked and so soon after returning from Shakespeare & Company – it means so much to me. My approach to understudy work will be as...
