We have a show.
It’s been one of the most exhausting and physically draining shows I’ve ever prepped for. And tonight we finally get to show it to a paying audience! Back when we began rehearsing this in May 2012, I decided to do a photography project; I wanted to do individual company portraits, and not only capture everyone’s personality – but show a gesture of gratitude to the people bringing this show to life. The show creators decided to use my photos for the lobby display, which I’m really excited about. So if you’re seeing the show, you’ll get to see them....

It’s a day off from the show, after a week of hard, hard work. We return for a twelve-hour tech and dress rehearsal tomorrow, running the full show twice, I believe. I can’t believe how much time we’ve all put in to this show. By my estimates, by the time we open, I will have spent nearly 130 hours on this show, over the course of 7 weeks of rehearsing. The results will speak for themselves. All I can say is that I don’t think I’ve ever worked this hard, outside of the work I did at Shakespeare & Company. A lot of exciting character work and development,...

Tech rehearsals are always exciting because the show starts to take shape: establishing lighting, moods – getting the cues right. It’s a lot of stop and go work. Tonight is July 4. We’re not out celebrating; we’re not shooting fireworks off along 24th Street or anywhere else in the Mission. We’re working hard on getting this show up. There were explosions all throughout the evening, which lent a spooky subtext to several of the monologues in the show. Rumi Missabu as Jacques Roux tore it up tonight during his speech: We demand that everyone should do all...

The company has now become fully entrenched at the Brava Theater in San Francisco. With moving into the space, we’ve been fine-tuning so many details. Everything from the songs to the combat pieces are being looked at and getting adjustments. The combat pieces are particularly awesome – I’ve never had so much fun beating people up. In a theatrical sense. But the fight choreography is so detailed and so realistic, I wish I could see what it looks like from the audience. We have a huge brawl at the end of the show that I know will leave the audience gasping. The set is...
Read MoreThe Period
Week One of the creation of Marat/Sade. As I begin to delve into the historical background of the play, I’ve began reading A Tale of Two Cities, by Dickens. Yes. I haven’t read it since junior high school, I’m sure. What am I to gain, I’m eager to find out. But I’d say the opening lines do set the tone nicely. And if I read them closely – how they mirror what is happening today. “IT was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it...
